conversations without compromise
The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) established the NAE Generation Forum to explore the potential for evangelical Christians to be involved in collaborative efforts aimed at reducing the number of abortions in the United States.
It is no secret that the debate over the legality of abortion continues to sharply divide our nation, as it has for decades. Sometimes overlooked, however, is the fact that the high rate of abortion in the United States is disturbing to the vast majority of Americans. According to a September 2008 Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life publication, “most Americans (73%) believe that abortion is morally wrong in nearly all (24%) or some (49%) circumstances.” Americans who may not see eye to eye on abortion generally may still share a deep troubling in their spirits over the termination of so many prenatal lives in this country (over 1 million each year).
Members of the NAE believe that the Bible reveals God’s calling and care for persons before they are born, which is why the NAE firmly and unapologetically opposes abortion. Indeed, "to protect the sanctity of human life and to safeguard its nature” is one of seven basic principles outlined in “For the Health of the Nation: An Evangelical Call to Civic Responsibility,” the NAE’s framework for evangelical public engagement.
This conviction also fuels the NAE’s interest in the growing conversation about how to find common ground in the effort to reduce the abortion rate in the United States. More than 1 million abortions per year is deeply troubling and unacceptable. Members of the NAE believe there are many across traditional dividing lines who share this view.
We can converse and cooperate without compromising our bedrock principles. It’s time to generate a real, honest, and productive dialogue among parties of goodwill. It's time to truly seek out collaborative efforts that will recognize and honor the dignity of all human life. It’s time to generate new ideas that will benefit families today, tomorrow and for generations to come. Indeed, today’s and tomorrow’s generations are depending on us.
