A recent New York City Department of Health report revealed that approximately 40 percent of reported pregnancies there ended in abortion. That is roughly double the percentage of pregnancies ending in abortion nationally.
The report (Table 4.13, page 85) also shows that over half of the NYC's 87,273 abortions were obtained by women in their 20's, and the number of abortions was greater than the number of live births for those age 24 and younger.
Faith leaders have called for new efforts to reduce the number of abortions. Rightly so. Churches and other faith communities need to practically and productively engage to confront this problem in New York and nationwide.
